Submission information

If you wish to submit an Intervention, a research essay, a What’s Left? essay or a book review the information below explains how.

Articles

Articles submitted for publication should not normally exceed 9,500 words. All text, notes, quotes and references must be double-spaced. A separate title page should list the title of the paper, the name(s) and address(es) of the author(s), and any footnote acknowledging help from others, etc.

An abstract of around 150 words should appear below the title, and that authors should supply no more than 4 keywords beneath their abstract. Ideally these words should also appear in the title and text of the abstract to add weight to the terms on the page.

Major subheadings should be in all capital letters. Headings for subsections within those sections should be in capitals and lower-case underlined. Endnotes should be kept to a minimum, double-spaced and placed on a separate page at the end of the article. References should be double-spaced on a separate page or pages at the end of the article, and should follow the Harvard format. The maximum size of illustrations is 170mm x 115mm. Full details also appear on the inside back cover of the journal and can also be viewed here.

The author(s) should email submissions to the Editorial Manager: Andrew Kent: antipode@manchester.ac.uk

Interventions

The interventions section is reserved for short (1500 words or so) papers reflecting on the state of radical political practice or theory (inside or outside of the academy). The section is also intended to provide a space for debate and disagreement around politically contentious issues in the left; and also, just as importantly, to report on strategies for political change and new forms of social/political organization in producing a more socially just and radically democratic social life. Within these broad parameters, we would welcome an Intervention on any aspect of your work. Papers can be as polemical as you prefer - the section is really meant to provoke debate and discussion about key theoretical, political and strategic issues for the Left. They should be sent to:

We will sometimes commission – or welcome suggestions for – Intervention Symposia. Previous symposia have focussed on things like ‘sweatshops’, the legacy of Derrida and the Palestine question.

Book Reviews and Review Symposia

Antipode publishes a relatively small number of book reviews. The journal tries, therefore, to focus on especially important or interesting texts that resonate with the journal’s aims.

Books for review, book reviews, offers of book reviews and suggestions for review symposia should be sent to:

Antipode Book Series and ‘Double Issues’

As noted elsewhere on this site, like its parent journal the Antipode Book Series reflects distinctive new developments in radical geographical research. It publishes books in a variety of formats – from reference works to works of broad explication to titles that develop the scholarly research base – but the commitment is always the same: to contribute to the creation of a new and more just society.

Over ten titles have been published to date. Apart from books contracted for the series, these titles include 'double' issues of Antipode which become books. Examples of the latter include Life's Work edited by Katharyne Mitchell et al. (2005), and Working the Spaces of Neoliberalism, edited by Liz Bondi and Nina Laurie (2006).

Authors or editors with ideas for Antipode books (including ‘double’ length issues of the journal itself) should contact Noel Castree at antipode@manchester.ac.uk. Prospective titles are subject to the normal assessment procedure: a submitted prospectus (4 plus pages normally) is reviewed by the Series Editor and 2 anonymous reviewers.

Normal length special issues

Antipode often publishes normal length special issues. If you have an idea for such an issue it should be worked-up into a prospectus (3-plus pages) that states the focus of the proposed special issue, its timeliness and rationale, and its content and contributors. This will be assessed by one of the editors (Noel Castree and Melissa Wright, plus 2 board members). Full details on formatting are available here.
